Understanding your MyVoltage tariffs

Tariffs, tariffs, tariffs – say this word a couple of times fast. Yes, we know it can be both a tongue and brain twister. This blog aims to help you with the logical side of your local municipality’s tarrifs.

Tariff meaning: “A list of the fixed charges made by your local municpality, especially for use of gas, electricity, or water.

In this case, tariff refers to the particular rate you will be billed at for the consumption of electricity, water and sanitation, or gas.

Here are a couple of the most common tariff questions our customers ask and their relevant answers.

My electricity tariffs

1. How are tariffs regulated?

Electricity tariffs are regulated by the National Energy Regulatory of South Africa (NERSA) to ensure that all service providers adhere to the governmental laws, policies, standards and best practices.

2. Is the cost of electricity the same everywhere in South Africa?

No. Tariffs differ from region to region, and from city to city. These rates are also determined by NERSA.

For example, if you relocate within Gauteng, you will be billed at a different rate in the city of Tshwane compared to the city of Johannesburg or Ekurhuleni.

Locality-based tariffs are influenced by a number of factors and availability of resources.

3. Do I pay more for my electricity when I use a metering system from MyVoltage?

No. MyVoltage has a legal obligation to strictly adhere to the approved tariffs as set out by NERSA.

*Charges for Eskom authorities are effective from 1 April to 21 March.

*Charges for Municipality authorities are effective from 1 July – 30 June.

My water & sanitation tariffs

1. Do I pay more for my water and sanitation usage when I use a metering system from MyVoltage?

No. You can rest assured that you are billed according to the tariffs as determined by your local municipality by-laws. These tariffs are published annually. This means that My Voltage is legally obligated to bill you at this set tariff.

My gas tariffs

1. Do I pay more for my gas usage when i use a metering system from MyVoltage?

No. The gas charges are prescribed by the Department of Energy and are updated and published regularly. Therefore you will not be billed more for using one of our metering systems.

The factors that may influence your tariffs

1. Reasons why the unit price of your electricity and water is not consistent

There is a simple rule to remember: The more electricity you use per month, the higher the unit price will be.

Your cost per unit is determined by an INCLINE BLOCK TARIFF SYSTEM.

Inclining Block Tariffs divide the electricity and water prices into different blocks/segments. The first block is at the lowest price. As you consume more electricity and water you automatically move onto the next block, which will become more expensive per unit.

TIP: Save water and electricity where possible so that you remain in the lowest block for as long as possible.

This cycle automatically resets at the start of every month.

2. How do I know I am being charged the correct amount?

Data is what drives us at MyVoltage. WE DON’T ASSUME, WE KNOW.

This means that your daily invoice is calculated according to your actual consumption. We provide opening and closing readings for every meter (electricity and water) that is connected to your unit.

Readings take place every day at midnight.

Charges are calculated as follows:

NUMBER OF UNITS USED XTHE APPLICABLE TARIFF (Excl. VAT)
(e.g. 10kwh)  Determined by the current Inclined Block Tariff
